About Hopton Hall

Hopton Hall, a historic gem nestled on the outskirts of the magnificent Peak District National Park. Its rich heritage spans over 600 years as the ancestral home of the esteemed Gell family of Derbyshire. The Hall’s grandeur has hosted notable figures throughout history, including Oliver Cromwell, Mary Queen of Scots, and Queen Caroline.

Originally encompassing a vast estate of 3,700 acres, Hopton Hall has witnessed changes over time, with a portion of its land now submerged beneath the serene waters of the Carsington Reservoir. The Gell family’s reign at Hopton Hall came to an end in the autumn of 1989 when the house transitioned out of their ownership. However, traces of their legacy remain scattered throughout Hopton Hall and its surrounding areas, including the Gell Chapel in St. Mary’s Church, Wirksworth, as well as the Anthony Gell School and Almshouse, also located in Wirksworth.

Today, Hopton Hall is in the capable hands of the Harvey family, who have lovingly restored the courtyard and transformed it into four cozy and inviting holiday cottages. These accommodations offer a comfortable and homely retreat for families and groups, serving as the perfect gathering place to “Meet in the Middle” of England.

In addition to the delightful cottages, Hopton Hall boasts enchanting woodland trails, including the famous Snowdrop Walk and the exquisite Summer Rose Gardens with its unique Crinkle-Crankle wall. Visitors can revel in the beauty of nature, explore the meticulously maintained gardens, and create cherished memories in this idyllic setting.

At Hopton Hall, history, natural splendor, and warm hospitality converge to provide a truly memorable experience for all who visit.
